re: The Living Wage
As one of your constituents I am writing to ask what steps you are taking within our area to promote the Living Wage.
The Living Wage is one of the most important tools we have in fighting in work poverty in Scotland. Whilst I appreciate the Living Wage has cross party political support, it is important that we do more to promote the Living Wage to local employers, particularly those in the private sector.
You will already be aware that the National Minimum Wage is not enough for individuals in Scotland to access the essentials of everyday life. £6.50 per hour will just never be enough to cover the day to day basics, never mind to save some money or plan for emergencies.
Hundreds of thousands of workers are being paid wages that basically equate to poverty pay. This is simply not right and I urge you to do everything you can to bring an end to poverty pay in our area.
One way you could do this is to promote the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative within our area. The initiative provides employers with the opportunity to become accredited which is a fair trade mark. It shows that the employer is committed to the living wage, and all staff, including sub-contracted staff, are paid at least the living wage.
